Squirrel is a service that many of us have to use, and when it works it works well. When it does not work dealing with Squirrel is the equivalent of sticking your hand into a bag of rabid gerbils.
I will therefore give you a few bits of information that I have picked up over the years, and hopefully this transfer of information helps the next time you deal with Squirrel support.
1. DO NOT MOVE PRINTERS! If you change the location of a receipt printer the printer may or may not work. The printers are meant to be where they are, and if you move one and it works it is pure luck.
2. Squirrel Terminals run on their own network. They are not directly attached to the regular network. This has been set up by Squirrel. Argus IT can test the lines, and verify connectivity, but after that it is up to Squirrel on how to proceed.
3. If you call into Squirrel to get a problem fixed make sure that they email you a full description of what they did. Send this information to Argus IT. The only way that we can stop some common problems is to find out why they are happening.
4. The payment terminals that you bring out to the guests can have issues connection if they are Bluetooth and not 3G. Bluetooth units need can have a range of up to 150 meters on a good day as long as they have a direct line of sight to the base station. If there are any obstacles, glass, concrete, people, etc.. they will have issues. If the unit is 3G then it can work most places, but it there are fluorescent lights, steel or concrete in the location there will be a weaker signal. Keep this in mind when using these terminals.
5. Squirrel servers tend to lose track of time. What I mean by this is that over time the internal clock of the server can fall off by 8 minutes. This will result in problems with terminal connectivity. It is a good thing to check when issues are happening.
6. If a terminal or printer is not working please make sure it is plugged in before calling Squirrel. I mean not just power, but the network cable also. This has been known to happen.
Well this may help, or you may be more confused then when you started this article. Stay strong and do not let Squirrel get you down.
