OPERA Cloud — 502 Bad Gateway and Other Common Issues
The 502 error is almost always Oracle's side, not your computer. Here's the full playbook.
✋
OPERA down during active guest service? Contact OPERA Support FIRST
Don't wait for a ticket response — Oracle's support staff have visibility into the OPERA platform that Argus IT does not. OPERA / Oracle Hospitality Support: [INSERT OPERA SUPPORT PHONE]

After contacting OPERA, submit an IT ticket too so we have a written record and can help with anything browser- or network-related on the Argus side. OPERA Cloud is hosted by Oracle — if their platform is down, only Oracle can fix it.
⚖️  Quick diagnostic: where is the problem?
Question 1: Are other staff also unable to use OPERA?
✅ Others are using OPERA normally
The problem is your computer or browser — continue below.
❌ No one at the property can use OPERA
Oracle's platform or your property's internet — skip to Property-Wide Outage.
Question 2: What does the error actually say?
  • "502 Bad Gateway" / "503 Service Unavailable" → Oracle server-side — see below.
  • "Page cannot be displayed" / timeout → network or browser — see Browser and Network Issues.
  • Login rejects valid credentials → see Cannot Sign In.
  • Loading but extremely slow → see OPERA is Slow.
💡 Photograph any error message before doing anything else — it helps both Oracle and Argus IT if escalation is needed.
😱  502 Bad Gateway errors
A 502 means Oracle's servers aren't responding properly to your browser. It's a server-side issue — nothing is wrong with your computer.
1
Wait 60 seconds and try once more. Most 502s are transient — Oracle's infrastructure hiccups and recovers within a minute or two. Don't refresh repeatedly.
2
Hard-refresh: press Ctrl + F5 to reload from scratch, bypassing cached errors.
3
Try a different browser (Edge ↔ Chrome). Error gone in the other browser = browser issue on your end. Error in both = Oracle-side.
4
Try an Incognito/InPrivate window (Ctrl + Shift + N in both browsers). Works there? Clear cookies for the OPERA site in your normal browser.
5
Still 502 after all that? Call OPERA Support. They'll confirm whether there's a known outage, give an estimated resolution time, and add your property to the affected-customers list (which speeds up notifications when it's fixed).
🌐  Browser and network issues
"Page cannot be displayed" or the browser hangs: your computer can't reach OPERA's servers at all (unlike a 502, where you reach them but get an error back).
1
Test general internet: try google.com. Nothing loads = your internet is down; submit a ticket. Google loads but OPERA doesn't = OPERA-specific.
2
Clear cache and cookies: Ctrl + Shift + Delete → time range All time → check Cookies and Cached images and files → Clear → restart the browser → try OPERA again.
💡 Clearing browser data signs you out of other websites too — you'll need to sign back in to them, but they'll work normally.
🔐  Cannot sign in to OPERA
⚠
OPERA has its own separate username and password
It is not your Argus email or workstation login. A change to your Argus password does NOT affect OPERA, and vice versa. Typing your Argus password into OPERA fails every time — this is the most common sign-in mistake.
1
Verify you're using your OPERA credentials. Your OPERA username was provided when the account was set up (short login name or email — either way, an OPERA-specific identity). Forgotten it? Your supervisor can look it up.
2
Check Caps Lock — OPERA passwords are case-sensitive. Re-enter slowly.
3
Password expired or forgotten? Your supervisor or manager can reset it directly in OPERA — usually in a minute or two. Faster than IT or OPERA Support.
4
Account locked? Same — supervisors can unlock accounts in the system.
5
Supervisor unavailable or can't fix it? Password/unlock → OPERA Support. Account doesn't exist / disabled / new user → your front desk manager — OPERA accounts at Argus are created at the property, not by Argus IT.
🐢  OPERA is slow
1
Test internet speed at fast.com in another tab — well below normal means it's the property internet; submit a ticket.
2
Close unused browser tabs — 30+ tabs slows everything.
3
Restart the browser completely, then restart the computer if it continues.
4
Slow for multiple staff? Contact OPERA Support — there may be a regional performance issue.
🚨  Property-wide OPERA outage
If no one can use OPERA, it's one of:
  • Oracle platform outage → only Oracle can fix it — call OPERA Support.
  • Property internet outage (no websites load at all) → Argus IT ticket.
  • Property network config issue (internet fine, OPERA specifically broken) → call OPERA Support to confirm the platform is up, then IT ticket.
Keeping the desk running during an outage
  • Use your property's manual/paper backup procedures (registration cards, manual key encoding if separate from OPERA).
  • Note all transactions on paper for entry once OPERA is back.
  • Keep guests informed: "Our reservation system is experiencing a brief outage — we'll have you checked in shortly."
  • Do NOT take payment outside normal procedures during an outage — discuss with your manager.
🆘  Who to contact
Supervisor / manager FIRST
Forgotten OPERA password · locked account · forgotten username · role/permission questions · day-to-day OPERA help · new staff needing an account (front desk managers create OPERA accounts at the property) · disabled account needing recreation.
OPERA Support
502/503/504 errors · OPERA down for everyone · slow for multiple staff · OPERA-specific errors · reports/configuration beyond your supervisor · user issues your supervisor couldn't fix.
Argus IT
No websites load at all · your Argus password fails everywhere · hardware problems · a different workstation or printer · OPERA Support says the issue is local.
Always inform Argus IT after a major OPERA issue, even if Oracle fixed it — it helps us track patterns. In your ticket include: asset tag (or workstation location) · your Argus email · your OPERA username if relevant · which property · the exact error (photo) · just you or everyone · who you've contacted and what they said · what you've tried.
