Waterfront Ballroom AV — How-To & Troubleshooting
ℹ️ You control the ballroom AV two ways: the in-room wall keypads, or the iPad running the AMX TP Control app. The wall keypads handle the everyday basics from inside the room. The iPad does everything the keypads do plus volume/gain levels, moving a microphone between ballrooms, music, and TV channel control. The full how-to manual — with screenshots and the ballroom layout diagrams — is attached to this article.
🛑 Never open or touch the AV rack. Amplifiers, processors, and network gear are off-limits. Most ballroom AV problems get worse when gear nobody's familiar with gets unplugged or switched. Use the keypads and iPad as described below; if that doesn't fix it, place a ticket with Argus IT.
📞 Stuck? Place a ticket with Argus IT first. If IT can't resolve it, IT contacts our AV vendor, MAX AVT, directly — you don't need to coordinate that.
⚡ In a Hurry? The 30-Second Version
- Three wall keypads per ballroom: far-left = lighting, middle = video/source (laptop, TV, screen, projector, mics), far-right = A/V Off.
- iPad app = AMX TP Control. Pick your ballroom on the top bar, then use Source Select or the Keypads / Microphone / Video tabs.
- Laptop: plug into the HDMI wall jack, then press the button for the ballroom you plugged into.
- Mic volume/gain and moving a mic between rooms → iPad only.
- TV channels → iPad only (Telus controls page).
- Done for the day? Press A/V Off (far-right keypad). Leave the rack alone.
🎛️ Know Your Controls
The three wall keypads (every ballroom has a group of three):
| Keypad |
Controls |
| Far-left |
Lighting for that ballroom |
| Middle |
Video / source — laptop source buttons (Ballroom 1/2/3), TV, Screen, Projector, and Mic 1 / Mic 2 |
| Far-right |
AV control — includes the A/V Off button (shuts the whole system down) |
The iPad — AMX TP Control app:
- Top bar: pick the ballroom you're standing in / want to control.
- Source Select (left side): HDMI 1 / 2 / 3 (= ballrooms 1, 2, 3) and Telus (the TV system). Picking a source turns the projector on, lowers the screen, and switches the video.
- Middle-bar tabs: Keypads (on-screen copy of the three wall keypads), Microphone (mic levels, room Master volume, Sonos music), and Video (HDMI/TV volume, screen & projector).
ℹ️ A note on the screenshots in the attached manual: the mute button is labelled "Level." That same "Level" label also shows the current volume/gain and moves as you adjust it — so "Level" is both the mute button and the live level readout for that mic, room, or source.
💻 Show my laptop on the screen (HDMI)
- Find the HDMI wall jack in the ballroom and plug your laptop in with an HDMI cable. Your laptop should detect it (you may see the resolution change).
- Turn the system on — either way works:
- Wall keypad: on the middle keypad, press the button for the ballroom you plugged into. Example: you plugged into Ballroom 2's jack but want it shown in Ballroom 3 — go to Ballroom 3's keypad and press the button labelled "Ballroom 2." The projector turns on, the screen comes down, and your laptop appears in the room you're standing in.
- iPad: select the ballroom on the top bar, then use Source Select → HDMI 1/2/3 (matching the jack you plugged into), or open the Keypads tab and press Ballroom 1/2/3.
- To show the same laptop in other ballrooms, repeat at each room's keypad (or switch rooms on the iPad's top bar) and select the ballroom you plugged into.
🎤 Set up a microphone
Each ballroom has two mic input jacks: the jack with an HDMI port beside it is Mic 1; the jack with no HDMI beside it is Mic 2.
- Plug the supplied microphone into the jack you want using an XLR cable.
- On the middle wall keypad, find the Mic 1 and Mic 2 buttons.
- Press the button for the mic you're using. If the light above the label is on, that mic is on. Both mics can be on at once.
To change a mic's volume/gain, or to send a mic from one ballroom into another, use the iPad:
- Top bar → pick the ballroom → Microphone tab. Every mic for every ballroom is here, each with volume up, volume down, and mute ("Level").
🔊 Control a ballroom's overall volume
- iPad → top bar → pick the ballroom → Microphone tab → the Master control (bottom-right corner). Up / down / mute ("Level").
🎵 Play music in a ballroom
- iPad → top bar → pick the ballroom → Microphone tab → the Sonos control (bottom-right corner). Raise the Sonos volume and music should start in that room.
- No sound? The Sonos player most likely isn't playing anything, or its own internal volume is turned down. Open the Sonos app on the iPad to choose what plays and set the player's volume.
📺 Watch / control the TV (Telus)
Two ways to turn the TV on:
- Wall keypad: on the middle keypad, press the TV button (at the bottom). Projector on, screen down, TV shows.
- iPad: top bar → pick the ballroom → Source Select → Telus. Projector on, screen down, and you land on the Telus controls page.
To change channels, use the iPad (the Telus controls page).
🔉 Control the HDMI or TV volume
- iPad → top bar → pick the ballroom → Video tab. Volume controls are labelled HDMI 1, 2, 3 (= ballrooms 1, 2, 3) and Telus (the TV box). Up / down / mute ("Level").
📽️ Turn the projectors and screens on or off
- Wall keypad (middle): the Screen button raises or lowers the screen; the Projector button turns the projector on or off.
- Note: pressing any Ballroom 1/2/3 or TV button also turns the projector on and brings the screen down.
- iPad: top bar → pick the ballroom → Video tab → screen and projector controls.
💡 Control the lights
- Wall keypad: the far-left keypad is lighting. Each button is a light in that ballroom — press to toggle on/off. To dim: press the light's button, then use the "+" and "–" buttons at the bottom of the keypad.
- iPad: open the Keypads tab, find the three on-screen keypads for your ballroom, and use the far-left (lighting) keypad the same way.
⏻ Turn the system off
- Wall keypad: on the far-right keypad, press A/V Off. The projector turns off, the screen goes up, and the audio shuts off.
- iPad: open the AMX TP Control app and use the A/V Off control.
🔧 Quick Troubleshooting
| Problem |
What to do |
| My laptop isn't showing |
Confirm the HDMI cable is fully seated in the wall jack and the laptop. On the middle keypad (or iPad), press the button for the ballroom you plugged into — not the room you're standing in. Check the projector is on and the screen is down. |
| Wrong room is showing my laptop |
The keypad button names the jack you plugged into. Go to the correct room's keypad and select that same ballroom. |
| Mic is on but no sound |
Check the light above Mic 1 / Mic 2 is lit on the keypad. Then on the iPad Microphone tab, make sure that mic's level ("Level") isn't muted or turned down, and that the Master volume is up. |
| Music won't play |
iPad → Microphone tab → raise the Sonos control. If still silent, open the Sonos app on the iPad — the player likely isn't playing or its volume is down. |
| TV is on but I can't change channels |
Channel control is iPad-only — use the Telus controls page (Source Select → Telus). |
| Screen won't come down / projector won't turn on |
Selecting a source (Ballroom 1/2/3 or TV) should drop the screen and power the projector automatically. If not, use the Screen and Projector buttons on the middle keypad directly. |
| Nothing responds / iPad app isn't working |
Place a ticket with Argus IT. Do not open or adjust the AV rack. |
📞 When You Can't Fix It — Place a Ticket With IT First
