Laptop will not connect to monitors when plugged into dock

Users will report this problem on a weekly basis.  There are few reasons.

  1. The laptop is not meant for that dock.  This is rare for the user normally uses the same dock all the time.  Though if you are at a new site and are using a new dock this dock may not work for your laptop
  2. Docking cable is faulty.  Thus happens more often than not.  The cable gets bent or compromised.  Try a cable from a working dock and see how it goes.
  3. Docking cable is plugged into the wrong port on the dock.  There is a specific port on Lenovo Docks that the cable is plugged into.  It will be at the back of the dock not the front of the dock
  4. The dock is faulty.  Go to a different dock and see if you are able to connect.  If you are there may be a problem with the dock.
  5. Software updates.  Always make sure the computer is updated before you call IT.  It is your responsibility to make sure that the device is fully updated before a ticket is placed.
  6. Docks turn on laptops, laptops do not turn on docks.  This is the most common problem.  If you plug in a laptop that is already on then you may have issues.  It needs to be noted that if you have not done this IT will make you do it.  Please do the following..
  • Unplug the laptop from the dock.
  • Turn off the dock.
  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Wait a few minutes.
  • Plug the laptop into the dock and then press the power button on the dock to turn on the laptop.
95 times out of 100 this is the solution.  With cable issues making up the rest of the problems.  The issue is rarely the dock.
